We used to say that with ten clowns you could take over the city. It was Paris, the 80s, when for some reason a handful of artists came together, painters, writers, magicians, clowns, and created a new Golden Age, an artistic movement centered around the street theater scene in Beaubourg and Saint Germain des Près. Later, the clowns would become the lead acts in Cirque du Soleil, so high was the level of talent, and I would end up writing screenplays with Roman Polanski and making films. But this was before any of us were known, when we were still struggling on the razor's edge of meaning and purpose, when the magic was still around every corner.

I was transfixed while reading “The World of Midgets”. Jeff Gross has written a raw, honest account of a time in his life when, inspired by Henry Miller, he left the U.S. to be a writer in Paris. The culmination of that spontaneous relocation is a novel teeming with other-worldly characters who plied their talents, and fought for survival, on the street of Paris in the 1980’s.For those of us who romanticize the life of the starving artist in Paris, this will knock the scales from your eyes. I gained an enormous amount of insight and respect for the heretofore unknown (to me) world of street performers, and artists in general, who, hunger be damned, will never surrender to the 9-5 world they cannot comprehend.

My kind of book... Really sorry it ended. Sure hope there is a book two in the works... same characters.
A group of street performers, a great story, a special place and a very special time...
Moving and inspiring. Great book.
World of Midgets is a moving tale of street artists told in that fine tradition by Americans in Paris who are down but never out. Each of the colorful characters, lead by the narrator Josef Klein, are on a quest for artistic freedom. The author Jeff Gross seeks out literary "ancestralhood" to Henry Miller and although he never receives Miller's stamp of approval, Jeff Gross firmly stakes his own claim to personal freedom in the land of the Rights of Man. I couldn't put my computer down (reading the e-version on my laptop). And I feel neither will you!
This is a great book about a fascinating world that most people know nothing about. Jeff Gross lived a great adventure and did a wonderful job bringing it to life.
Beautifully written. Inspiring. Engaging story. The author takes us along on his adventures in the streets of Paris in the 1980s, introducing us to a panoply of vivid, fascinating, lively, spirited characters whose stories weave in and out of the narrator's life. Great sensitivity from a truly talented writer whose prose is delectable. Both powerful and poetic. A captivating read!
I thought this memoir was vivid, fascinating, funny and smartly observed. I found Jeff Gross's book to be an utterly absorbing and original portrayal of the struggling writer in Paris, a wonderful read!
This is a spectacular read! I was engrossed in the story from page one; Jeff Gross's observations and descriptions give an outstanding portrait of the lives, loves/hates and inspirations of the street-artist scene during this tumultuous time in Paris, as well as the upheaval he felt in his own Life that we can all relate to. This book will inspire you, make you laugh and give the reader a sense that - art is Life but LIFE is the finest Art of all. To hold on to your experiences, learn from them and be true to who you want to be and what you want to accomplish - against insurmountable odds it may seem ; that is the sign of a true Artist!!
